The snow leopard or Panthera uncia is native to the Himalayas and Central Asia .. It lives in a Tundra biome and prefers cold, snowy, and mountainous terrain. It ranges in color from dark to light gray with a white underbelly, with large black spots covering the upper body. These animals range in weight from fifty-five to one-hundred and eighty-five pounds. Their body length can be between 1.8 and 2.3 meters and have a fur length of 1 to 3 inches. It was listed by the Snow Leopard Trust as endangered in 1972, and was reapplied after an evaluation of the remaining population in 2008.The snow leopard prefers mountainous steppes and coniferous forests in the winter but prefer alpine meadows in the summer.The main problem snow leopards face is poaching by humans. There are only around 500 snow leopards in zoos worldwide. The International Snow Leopard Trust was founded in 1981 and has been using several methods to track and try to save the snow leopards.
